The Town Park in Wadowice is considered to be one of the most beautiful and well-kept facilities of this type in southern Poland. We invite you to one of the most attractive corners of the Pontifical Town, which was established over 110 years ago.
Park on the southern hill of Wadowice was established in 1912 on the initiative of people gathered in the TUMWIO Association (Society for Beautifying the Town of Wadowice and the surrounding area). Work began on marking out paths, planting hedges, planting trees not only of native species, but also exotic ones, and creating playgrounds. In 1913, the construction of the 'Górnica' youth hostel and two wooden gazebos was started. In a quiet corner of the park, in 1915, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady, Queen of the Polish Crown, was built.
The interwar period is a flourishing park. The shelter was enriched with a beautiful veranda, and a third gazebo was added to the Park. A regimental orchestra stationed in Wadowice, the 12th Infantry Regiment Ziemia Wadowice, sounded in a specially built concert bowl and tennis courts were built right next to it.
In 1934, a mound dedicated to the great Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz was built in the highest place (approx. 317 m above sea level).
After World War II, with the death of the president of 'TUMWIO' Association Czesław Panczakiewicz, the Society's activities were frozen. In 1971, the Society of the Friends of the Wadowice Region continued the 'TUMWIO' Association tradition, but the park changed its face: littered alleys, neglected architectural structures, and a mutilated tree.
After the fall of communism, the local government of Wadowice began the renovation of the Town Park in 1990, which lasted until 2019.
In 2018-2019, during the next reconstruction of the Wadowice City Park, the following were revitalized: the Adam Mickiewicz Mound, the concert bowl (additional facilities were added) and the audience. The tennis courts were also renovated and the new shape of the hostel building became a meeting place for cafés. In addition, the park has two outdoor gyms, mini-climbing walls, new playgrounds, and a viewing platform with a telescope. The alleys are covered with a new cube. There are even waterholes for pets. During the summer period, concerts, festivals, games and even open-air theater performances and film screenings are organized here. It is worth mentioning that Karol Wojtyła, as a junior high school student, performed on stage in the city park, incl. in 'Idyll, or a midsummer song about sobótka' by Jan Kochanowski.
Natural attractions
The garden is also a nature park. Information boards about the park's flora and fauna are located along the alley. The park offers interesting specimens of rare trees: Robinia pseudoacacia, white pine, Canadian pine, American tulip tree and Japanese ginkgo. The plant cover of the park is systematically renewed and enriched. In 2008, three new Douglas firs were planted, and in 2014, three young plane trees as well as spruce, fir and pine trees of various varieties and species. The park, full of old trees and brush, is also home to hedgehogs, birds and nimble red squirrels.
